Gem Institute Timeline
- Established in 1949 by Larry & Gloria Gemma, Gem Plumbing & Heating has grown from a one man, one truck plumbing company to one of the largest complete home services companies in the United States today. Gem has evolved from a traditional "mom and pop" business to an innovative "leader" in the industry.
- Upon graduating from college, Larry, Leonard and Edward Gemma, along with their brother Anthony, guided the Company in a new direction. With a new mission to provide a large customer base with true 24 hour emergency service, each son bought a truck and joined their father in providing plumbing service throughout the community.
- B y the late 1990's, our hard work had produced significant results. However, we recognized that growth was becoming a major obstacle, and our company was spiraling out of control. The decision to discuss the fate of the company became inevitable.
- In 2000, with the assistance of the RI Department of Economic Development, Workforce Development, outside business consultants, affinity groups, and trade organizations, we developed a three year re-structuring plan which included the implementation of a strategic and innovative marketing plan, new technology, including a state of the art call and dispatch center, implementation of a comprehensive software package that would allow for maximum customer information tracking at the initial call stage, and the establishment of a partnership with inventory.
- Gem was ranked as the 54th largest privately owned companies in Rhode Island by Providence Business News and placed 13 th on the top 100 fastest growing companies in Rhode Island .
- Gem moved up on the largest privately owned companies in RI to the 52 nd spot and placed 22 nd on the top 100 fastest growing companies in RI.

- Gem continued to grow, moving up one more spot to the 51 st place on the largest privately owned companies in RI, but fell down to the 32 nd spot on the top 100 list.

- Gem made a major jump up to the 31 st spot on the largest privately owned company in RI and placed 11 th on the top 100 list. Gem received the Best Contractor To Work For by HVAC News, the SBANE Innovation Award (Smaller Business Association of New England), the Small Family Owned Business of the Year Award (SBA) (State and Regional Winner), the Excellence in Business Award - Over 100 Employees (Providence Business News), and the Constructech Award for Technology Innovation - Silver. In addition, the Gemma Family established the Gem Institute for Performance Excellence in an effort to share their knowledge and help other companies achieve world-class results.
