| Rhode Island’s Newest Statewide Wellness Initiative…Transforming Healthcare in Rhode Island |
Gem Plumbing & Heating has created a system that could be a model for companies both large and small. The objective is to give more autonomy to employees while at the same time, allowing the system to be more flexible. We believe this will drive down healthcare costs, while at the same time, create healthier, safer workplaces. Our immediate goal is to create “Well Workplaces” in an effort to reduce unhealthy and unsafe habits by nearly 50% by 2010. Current statistics show that 56% of Rhode Islanders are overweight or obese, while an alarming 52% do not exercise regularly. Smokers currently account for 22% of the states population. Through positive incentives, we believe we can help affect behavioral change with a true wellness program that will be embraced by both employers and employees alike.
We have amassed the resources to support our initiative including health professionals, behavioral specialists, human resource consultants, legal counsel, and the insurers. Once completed, this pilot program of wellness initiatives will result in measurable effectiveness and cost savings per person, as well as, create healthier Rhode Islanders.
Gem Plumbing & Heating is located in Lincoln, RI and has been owned and operated by the Gemma family since 1949. The company currently employs over 300 employees, manages 150 service trucks, and operates in five New England states.
