| 2003 Komen Local Hero Award |
The Gemma Family was recently presented with the "Local Hero" Award in the fight against breast cancer. BMW of North America partnered with the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation to hold the BMW Ultimate Drive Fundraising event at Inskip in Warwick, RI.
Over $7 million dollars is raised each year during this event in which BMW donates two fleets of cars to the Komen Foundation. Through the local Affiliates, these cars travel across the country and for every mile that they are test driven, one dollar is donated to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
The highlight of these events is the presentation of the "Local Hero Award", which is given to someone in the community who has made a tremendous impact on breast health and the importance of early detection.
The Gemma Family was chosen as this years "Local Hero", in memory of their mother, Gloria Gemma, who died of breast cancer in March of 2001. They were presented with a beautiful plaque during the ceremony on Monday June 30, 2003.
Over 212,000 women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer in 2003. That is one woman every two minutes. Over 40,000 women will die from this dreadful disease this year. That's one every 12 minutes. Men are also at risk of getting breast cancer. Nearly 1,500 men are diagnosed every year. Over 400 men die from this disease every year in the U.S.
